Why do we recruit new members of SDIEP?

We are planning additional exploration, mapping, and other work on the South Daito Island in December 2024.

We are eager to share the wonders of this cave complex, and we want to experience of exploration together with new friends.
We hope that those who participated in this expedition will continue to participate in our other expeditions and become our friends.

What is SDIEP?

SDIEP is an abbreviation for "South Daito Island Exploration Project".

Reward of paticipating

The only reward for participating in this expedition is honor.
I would be happy if the very fact that we were able to do the expedition together was a reward in itself.

Description of exploration and investigation

We intend to perform the following in December 2024

  1. Exploration of unexplored areas of underwater caves
  2. Into a subterranean lake that we have not yet entered underwater
  3. Create Maps(including Map and Stick Map)
  4. Laying out lines for mapping
  5. Silt extraction from underwater caves where the water near the entrance of water is filled with silt
  6. Exploration of caves from the sea side to the island
  7. Investigation of the location of reported freshwater springs
  8. Exploration of a cave that continues all the way to the half-water surface.
  9. Filming and making videos of the above works

Information

  • Date : December 15-21, 2024
    • Meeting Time : 5:00 p.m. on Dec 15,2024
    • Participation at all dates is not required, but attendance of Dec 15 is required as the program will be explained at that time.
    • Departure Date : Dec 21, 2024
      Please make your own reservations for the flight according to your individual convenience.
    • If you would like to dive for adjustment or for fun diving in Okinawa, please let us know. We will gladly guide you.
  • Location : Minamidaito Island(South Daito Island) in Okinawa prefecture, Japan
  • Accomodation : We will arrange local accommodations.
  • Transportation : We will arrange a car. We will pick you up from the airport and take you to the accomodation.
  • Cost : The cost of accomodation, car rental, and gas filling will be charged.
    We will be reimbursing actual expenses, but expect to pay approximately $100 per day.

  • Precautions : Foreign currency exchange is not available on the island.
    There are a sufficient number of stores and eateries on the island.

Group Division

  • Cave Exploration Team :
    • Explore new passage
    • Explore new cave
    • Take photos and videos in the caves
  • Cave Survey Team :
    • Install survey line
    • Make stick maps
    • Make detail maps
  • Silt Removal Team :
    • Suck out silt in the water
    • Allow passage through a passage blocked by silt
  • Ocean Exploration Team :
    • Look for caves that can be entered from the ocean side
    • Dive where there is information that fresh water is springing up.
    • Take photos and videos in the ocean
  • Support Team :
    • Editing photos and videos.
    • Perform tank filling operations
    • Process the information gathered.

The group division will be determined by the organizer.

Depending on the situation, roles may be assigned across groups, or changes may be made.

Group division may also be changed depending on the date and time.

Requirement for each division

  • Cave Exploration Team :
    • TDI Full Cave Diver, GUE Cave 2, or equivalent
    • TDI Sidemount, GUE Cave sidemount, or equivalent
    • Previous experience exploring underwater caves
    • More than 100 full cave diving experiences
    • Sidemount configuration
  • Cave Survey Team :
    • TDI Full Cave Diver, GUE Cave 2, or equivalent
    • TDI Sidemount, GUE Cave sidemount, or equivalent
    • Previous experience surveying underwater caves.
    • More than 100 full cave diving experiences
    • *Adapt to the way we do our surveys.
    • Sidemount configuration
  • Silt Removal Team :
    • TDI Intro to cave Diver, GUE Cave 1, or equivalent
    • TDI Sidemount, GUE Cave sidemount, or equivalent
    • More than 25 cave diving experiences
    • Sidemount configuration
  • Ocean Exploration Team :
    • TDI Decompression procedures diver, GUE Tech 1, or equivalent
    • TDI Sidemount, GUE cave sidemount, or equivalent
    • Sidemount configuration
  • Support Team :
    • Be able to operate your computer
    • Work as part of a team

Conditions and Parameters

Land conditions and environment

  • Temperature : Low 15 degrees celsius, High 22 degrees celsius
  • Foreign currency exchange is not available on the island.
  • There are a sufficient number of stores and eateries on the island.

Cave Diving conditions and environment

  • Temperature : 22 to 24 degrees celsius
  • Depth : Maximum Depth is 20m, Average Depth is 10m
  • Height from ground surface to water : 10m to 20m
  • Distance from ground surface to water : about 30m to 50m, some caves are more.

Ocean conditions and environment

  • Temperature : 22 to 24 degrees celsius
  • The island is surrounded by open ocean and the dive will be a drift dive.
  • There is no beach.

How to get South Daito Island

South Daito Island(Minamidaito island) can be reached by plane.
There are two flights a day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, from Naha International Airport in Japan to Minamidaito Airport.
